Samutsakhon Province

The oldest name of the area is Tha Chin because it was a trading port where Chinese junks arrived. In 1548 the city was promoted to Sakhon Buri town, and was renamed to Mahachai in 1704 after the khlong Mahachai which was dug then and connected with the Tha Chin river near the town. In Rama IV, it was renamed to Samutsakhon town. It was promoted to Samutsakhon province in the reign of Rama V, however the old name Mahachai is still sometimes used by the locals.

Samutsakhon province is covering area about 840 square kilometres and its population is about 443,000.

There are many attractive places such as Khlong Khok Kham, and Talat Maha Chai.

Local Transportation

  • Car: Take road on High way no. 35 Thonburi-Pakthor (Rama II Road) to Maha Chai junction and turn left to Samutsakhon province. Total distance is about 82 kms.
  • Bus: Both air-conditioned and non air-conditioned buses leave Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal (Boromaratchachonnani Road) to Samutsakhon province daily.
